What can you use the app for?

Panoramio is a site where you can share some of your favorite photos of certain places around the world. Unlike other photo sharing websites this one incorporates with Google maps so that you can pinpoint where the photos have come from. This makes it a very interesting site to share memories and help people decide whether or not they want to visit the location. It’s also a fantastic site to use to research different locations and to get a sense of what it’s like before you actually visit. The photos are taken by people just like you, so you can be sure that the photos haven’t been touched up or edited extensively. Panoramio is brought to us by Google, so it’s obviously going to be big.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

The original version of Panoramio was created by Eduardo Manchon Aguilar and Joaquin Cuenca Abela in 2005. The site was launched on 3rd October 2005 and became popular very quickly, by 19th March 2007 there were over one million photographs uploaded to the site. By June of the same year the number of photos was over 2 million. And by the end of the year the number of the photos became 5 million. During the summer of 2007 the site was sold to Google for an undisclosed sum.

What are the differences to other apps?

There are lots of photo sharing websites out there, however many of these just allow you to upload photos and talk about them. Panoramio is different as it uses Google maps to pinpoint where the photos are taken on a map. This makes looking at them much more interesting. Many people also find that it’s a great resource to use to decide where to go on holiday. As all of the important landmarks are highlighted on the map it’s easy to decide what you want to see.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

It’s very easy to use Panoramio and doesn’t take long to get used to. Finding pictures is just a matter of searching for a certain place by putting text in the search box. Once you’ve done this you will be displayed with a map with various pinpoints and pictures of attractions around the area. This is a fantastic way to find out what the area is like and whether you want to visit the attractions. Finding places to visit is very easy and you shouldn’t have a problem with any of it.

How does the registration process work?

Although Panoramio is a Google company now it seems to be a separate registration system, this means that even if you have a Google account you will still have to register for this separate site. You don’t need to register for an account if you just want to look at the photos, however if you want to comment and upload your own photos then you will need to register. It’s an easy process and involves entering your email address twice, your username and a password. A word of warning, you do not have to confirm the password twice, so make sure you type it carefully. Once you have signed up you will be able to start uploading photos straight away.

What does it cost to use the application?

It’s completely free to use Panoramio and as it’s a Google company this is nothing new. There aren’t any noticeable adverts anywhere on the site though, and there didn’t seem to be any Google Adwords adverts like many would expect.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Panoramio is a great application for people that like to travel and want to share their travel photography with people all around the world. Panoramio makes it really easy for anyone to upload photos and link them to the locations where they are taken. This makes the site more than just a photo sharing website and actually makes it quite useful.

  • Upload your photos from locations all around the world
  • Pinpoint the location of your photos on a Google map
  • Search for photos of a particular area
  • Share photos easily online.
  • Easy geographical search functions.
